Silica gel packets are used to absorb moisture and keep things dry. Many manufacturers add these desiccant packs to their new products to keep them fresh and moisture-free for the consumer.
Silica gel's high specific surface area (around 800 m2/g) allows it to adsorb water readily, making it useful as a desiccant (drying agent). Silica gel is often described as "absorbing" moisture, which may be appropriate when the gel's microscopic structure is ignored, as in silica gel packs or other products.
Usage & Storage
Not left open to the atmosphere for longer than 15 minutes. Larger sachets should not be removed from their packaging more than 1 hour before they are required for use. The shelf life of silica gel in a sealed environment can safely be said to be between 4 and 12 months.
Applications of Silica Gel in Different Industries
1) As a Refrigerant in Industrial adsorption systems-reduce dew point
applications such as in Gas Chromatography techniques, in refrigerants, in dew point reduction for natural gas, drying of Liquid Hydrocarbons.
Silica gel uses in footwear industry- decrease loss damage by 80%
Silica gel uses for shoes are available in white packets which intend to retain the durability of the shoes and other footwear’s made of leather.
Protection of Lens in Cameras
Underwater Cameras even after perfect cleaning ends up in fogging the lens of the camera.
Therefore, the formation of moisture inside the cameras results in damaging the picture quality which can be avoided only by placing the desiccants in sachets after cleaning.
In Medicinal Industries
Pills and medicines that which are in solid form and packed in bottles contain small sachets inside.
